ENGLISH TUITION
The Importance of Studying English

English is the most important subject that a student can learn in school. Each and every one of us should have knowledge and mastery of the English language because it is an essential foundation for success in all subjects. If a child gets behind in their English, all other subjects will be more difficult. No one wants their child to be at such a disadvantage.

For the older student; passing GCSE English is usually a prerequisite for going on to other studies. Not making the grade in English can be a frustrating stumbling block. A good grasp of English increases your chances of getting a good job and it's also the language of international communication, the media and the internet. Learning English is important for socialising and entertainment as well as work!

I am available to tutor one-to-one English, online, with the following age groups:
  • KS2 (children aged 7-11)
  • KS3 (students aged 11-14)
  • KS4 (students aged 14-16)
  • Any age for GCSE English coaching
Whether it is in getting to grips with the basic skills of reading or writing at Primary School, or in analysing the sub-plots in Shakespeare, I can provide high quality one-to-one English tuition online.
English Tutoring for the KS2 Child (Ages 7-11)

I am here to help your child at every stage of their junior education, including preparing them for SATS in year 6. English education consists of a daily lesson in KS2, and is made up of:

- Reading
- Writing
- Speaking and listening

Learning English as part of a class doesn't suit every child and valuable months, or even years of learning, can be missed out if the child's needs are overlooked.
Reading

Consider the skill of reading - it is how we decode all our other learning for the rest of our lives! Reading is the foundation that must be nurtured and encouraged at a young age. I find my own love of reading infectious as I share the journey with each learner. Throughout KS2, a child should move from decoding words to interpretation. At the start of year 3 most children are reading around 300 of the most frequent words: by the end of year 6, most are confident, fluent readers. Sometimes a child may have a particular block and with a one-to- one little help, they will overcome the hurdle and improve more quickly than you ever thought.

I can help your child to:
  • Read more independently
  • Be a self motivated reader
  • Understand themes, plots and ideas
  • Recognise the use of figurative language
  • Compare different writing styles
  • Find information in a piece of non-fiction
Writing

Writing should develop throughout KS2 and progress is evident when handwriting becomes clearer and neater, spelling is more accurate, and punctuation is used correctly. The children write longer pieces now, using characters, dialogue and more imaginative vocabulary. I am experienced in helping children with dyslexia; much can be done to help them when working individually.

I can help your child to:
  • Improve spelling, punctuation & grammar
  • Enjoy creative and imaginative writing
  • Write with structure and purpose
  • Correctly use connectives, adverbs, speech
  • Understand clauses with commas
  • Use active and passive voice

A free consultation lesson with me will enable me to assess your child's needs then create a tailor-made course of study.
English Tutoring for the Secondary Aged Student

Transition into secondary education is not easy for some students. The new, larger environment and the amount of change (at rapid speed!) can be overwhelming - it can be rather a shock. The secondary style of education means that your child sees LOTS of teachers and they will not necessarily know your child very well. My experience in both the secondary and primary setting means that I understand the challenges and can identify the issues affecting your child. I can assist by offering personalised support with their English studies.

Succeeding in English can impact on all other learning

Sometimes it is a matter of 'bridging the gap' from primary school and other children need help to get the necessary grade at GCSE.

I am able to help your child with English Language and English Literature, to give them the extra boost that makes a difference in confidence and ultimately, results.

I am familiar with GCSE English syllabuses from the following exam boards:
  • OCR
  • EDEXCEL
  • AQA
