INSTRUMENTAL TUITION

I am able to teach piano to pupils of all ages and abilities. Children need to have the maturity to understand that learning an instrument is a commitment; I will consider beginner piano pupils from the age of 6. Support from parents is essential so that a practice routine is established and accommodated into the family schedule. You will need to have your own instrument, either an acoustic or electric piano. I am happy to advise.
Adults are very welcome students as it is never too late to learn!  I am available to teach adults and children who are home-schooled during the day time.
The beginner piano method I use enables pupils to learn the geography of the keys quickly and confidently, you will soon be able to read and play tunes across the piano keyboard. Many pianists like to take graded ABRSM exams to measure progress and for the sense of achievement. However, some people love to simply play for pleasure which is equally important.  I also encourage pupils to play in concerts and festivals. I try to pair up students to play piano duets which develops ensemble skills and it's also great fun. I can train pupils to grade 8 and beyond and have prepared many students for Music Conservatoire auditions.
The flute is a beautiful woodwind instrument that provides the budding musician with many opportunities to play solo  but also the option to play in ensembles, wind bands and even orchestras. However, a child needs to be physically capable of holding the flute comfortably and the adult front teeth should be fully in place. The minimum age for starting flute is usually usually nine. I would advise learning the recorder prior to an orchestral woodwind instrument, I am able to teach recorder as a precursor to flute playing.
I spend time ensuring a good hand position and posture to encourage good habits. If you would like to work towards graded exams; I will provide my services as piano accompanist free of charge because you are my student.
I LOVE music literacy. In fact I love it so much, I made films about how  it should be taught and have written a manual on the teaching of the Tobin Music System. Everything I teach incorporates the theory of music and aural training. These are very important aspects of musical development and will enable you to understand more about the music you are studying - to promote independent learning. I will show you how to unlock the fascinating patterns in music to make learning easier and quicker.
I would advise students to progress through the graded music theory exams alongside the practical grades.
Composition tutoring and GCSE Music coaching is available too. Sadly, many students find it difficult to compose meaningful pieces of music in order to fulfil the syllabus because they are not taught to use harmony. I have experience of teaching GCSE music and will show ANYONE  how they can quickly compose melodious music. If you are already musically literate, you will be confidently composing after a just a term of lessons. For a complete novice I would advise two terms of one-to-one sessions. I use the Tobin Music System to teach composition.
