HISTORY TUITION
Why study History?
The Guardian reported that ‘a historian looks at problems in a wide-ranging way and is more likely to find useful solutions than any other qualified person.’ GCSE History helps us to study key events and individuals from the past and the ways in which they have shaped our present. Students learn how to interpret sources, work out causes of past events and motives of people involved. Historians learn skills of reasoning, analysis and evaluation. History allows you to show initiative, draw conclusions and present persuasive answers. History provides the ideal platform for higher education and will prepare you for professions such as police, law, journalism, the Civil Service, banking, sales and education. Al Murray – the comedian and Prince Charles both have History degrees, so who knows you could end up doing stand-up or opening hospitals!

One-to-one Tip Top History Tutoring will enable and motivate your child to analyse and probe deeper, giving a much better foundation for a totally exam based subject.  Learning online allows me to direct students to the right resources and we can exchange work and feedback with ease.

GCSE History is a wonderful subject to study but it is probably one of THE HARDEST subjects to master; sometimes students feel swamped with the sheer amount of content. I have a love for History which goes all the way back to when, as a 9 year old, I asked my local librarian if there were any more History books in the library as I’d read every book in the junior section. Memorably, she gave me one adult ticket which I could use to obtain History books with from the grown up section; my world opened up! I have a degree in History and have taught History at KS3, GCSE and A-Level.

I can help your child to:
  • Develop and extend their knowledge and understanding of specified key events, periods and societies in local, British, and wider world history; and of the wide diversity of human experience
  • Engage in historical enquiry to develop as independent learners and as critical and reflective thinkers
  • Develop the ability to ask relevant questions about the past, to investigate issues critically and to make valid historical claims by using a range of sources in their historical context
  • Develop an awareness of why people, events and developments have been accorded historical significance and how and why different interpretations have been constructed about them
  • Organise and communicate their historical knowledge and understanding in different ways and reach substantiated conclusions
How is GCSE History assessed?
There are various exams boards but as an example; the Edexcel History GCSE course is assessed through 3 exams at the end of Year 11. This entails 4 hrs and 20 minutes of exams in total. There is no coursework or controlled assessment element to this course. As the subject is exam based, exam technique is essential. I can help your child focus in on exactly what they need to know.

Here is a typical example of the areas of study in GCSE History (EDEXCEL)
Topic 1: Medicine Through Time
This is a study of change and continuity. Students study how medicine and healthcare have developed over time and also the factors which accelerate or slow down their development. There will be a source focus on Medicine and healthcare during WW1.

Topic 2: Weimar and Nazi Germany, 1918–39
This topic is a Modern Depth study. Students study the inter-war years in Germany and how the conditions and weak government allowed the rise to power of Hitler and Nazis. Students also study how Hitler took power and the moves he made to consolidate his power.

Topic 3: Superpower relations and the Cold War, 1941– 91
This is a Period Study about how the cold war happened and how it ended. Students study many of the key events and how relations between the USA and USSR changed and shaped the world we live in today.

Topic 4: Anglo-Saxon and Norman England, c1060–88
This is a British Depth Study. Students study Saxon society and England, the Norman Conquest and Battle of Hastings. Students discover how the Norman Invasion changed society dramatically
